{ FREE CROCHET PATTERN } Modern Squares Fox Blanket

I’m not sure if it’s the recent Spring-like weather or the fact that I just threw a baby shower for my friend last weekend, but baby fever has been hitting me hard! So I thought it only appropriate to follow up my recent baby bonnet pattern release with a baby blanket pattern. I was browsing Instagram early last year when I came across this fox blanket photo from @tipsytessie. While Therese does not have an official pattern for this beautiful make, she does share how she makes the individual squares and has given me her blessing to share how I constructed my crochet fox blanket replica here! If you’re not already, definitely go give her a follow — her feed is gorgeous!

Fox blanket made from crochet granny squares

There are two major steps to constructing this crochet fox blanket and I’ll be outlining each step separately:
1. Crocheting the squares
2. Sewing the squares together

But first — what do you need?

SUPPLIES NEEDED

  • Yarn/Quantity: I used a mix of Baby Bee Sweet Delight Yarn (in Toy Elephant Marled (2.5 skeins), Teddy (1 skein), and Soft Licorice (1 skein)) and Yarn Bee Sweet Divinity (in Red Clay – 1-2 skeins), but you can use any weight 3 yarn in 4 colors. Heavier weight yarn can be used, but will result in a larger blanket — either way, be sure to use the same weight across all 4 colors.
  • Hook Size: 4.5mm or size recommended by yarn size/brand
  • Other Material: scissors, darning needle, supplies for blocking

STITCH KEY (U.S. Terms)

  • Ch – Chain
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet

COLOR KEY

  • Color A: Gray
  • Color B: Orange
  • Color C: Beige
  • Color D: Black

NOTES

Beginning chain counts as stitch.

Show me your makes!! Please share your finished items using the hashtag #modernsquaresfoxblanket and #sweethomekentucky on social media – I’d love to see how they turned out!

Step 1: Crocheting the Squares

You’ll need to make the following quantities of each color square:

LARGE SQUARES
Gray solid: 49
Orange solid: 16
Gray/Orange: 8
Gray/Beige: 8

SMALL SQUARES
Gray solid: 40
Orange solid: 16
Black solid: 8
Gray/Black: 8

*Reminder that you can also find instructions for making Therese’s filled granny squares and two-color squares on her Instagram Highlights.

Chain 4. Join chain into a ring with a slip stitch into the first chain stitch.

Round 1: Working around the ring you just created: Ch. 2, 2 DC, Ch. 2 (this creates the first corner), 3 DC, Ch. 2 (2nd corner), 3 DC, Ch. 2 (3rd corner), 3 DC, Ch. 2 (4th corner). End the round by joining with a slip stitch into the top of beginning chain.

Round 2: Ch. 2, work a DC into next 2 stitches and a 3rd and 4th DC into the Ch. 2 space from the round before. *Ch. 2, DC 2x into same corner, 3 DC into next 3 stitches, 6th and 7th DC into the Ch. 2 space from the round before.* Repeat from *to* around (7 DC on each side), ending with a Ch. 2 for the last corner and a final DC before slip stitching into the top of beginning chain.

Continue working around, increasing each side by 4 stitches each time (7, 11, 15, etc) until the square reaches desired size (see below for sizing of small and large squares for this pattern):

Small Squares: Stop after Round 2 (7 DC on each side)
Large Squares: Stop after Round 4 (15 DC on each side)

Step 2: Crochet Fox Blanket Assembly

My favorite way to join the squares together is using an invisible seam stitch. Click here for a great tutorial using squares like these.

You’ll want to assemble your squares using the grid below. Once done, weave in all your ends and move on to finishing.

Also, you can always duplicate the pattern below for more or less foxes! You can also increase or decrease your square sizes for larger or smaller blankets — just be sure that your small squares end up at half the size of your large squares so they’ll line up correctly when stitched together.

FINISHING

Optional: Add an outside border. Starting in one corner, single crochet in each stitch around, with two chains at each corner and ending with a slip stitch to the first SC. Repeat for a second round.

I highly recommend blocking the blanket once finished to give it an overall finished look! I will usually soak the blanket in lukewarm water for about 20 minutes, squeeze out the excess water and press between two towels to get as much excess water out as possible. Then pin the blanket into shape on blocking pads or even just on some towels in a carpeted room that you can stick pins into! Just be sure it’s in a spot where others won’t be walking around. 🙂

And that’s it! Don’t forget to share your finished makes with me — I love to see them! I’m also trying to think of some other geo-animals that could work with these squares. If I come up with anything good, I’ll be sure to post here on the blog about it. Thanks for visiting!
