{ FREE CROCHET PATTERN } Buttons and Lace Scarf

Happy Spring! These past couple of months have gone by both very fast and painfully slow (anyone else feel that way?). The COVID-19 crisis and quarantine lifestyle that came along with it has really messed with my sense of time. But I do know that spring is here in Kentucky and this season doesn’t last for long before we get hot and humid summertime. So before we exchange our warm winter knits for bathing suits and start designing crochet home decor instead of sweaters, I wanted to introduce this beginner-friendly scarf pattern. This buttoned crochet scarf is lightweight and lacy, perfect for those in-between seasons of spring and fall, and the statement buttons add a unique touch. Hope you enjoy making this pattern!

Please note: If you’d like a printable, ad-free version of this pattern, you can find the paid version on Etsy or Ravelry. The paid version also includes some additional up-close photos to help with attaching the final ribbing — thanks so much for your support!

Buttons and Lace Scarf Pattern

Starting with I Hook (5.5.mm):

Row 2: Turn, Chain 1. HDC in 1st stitch. HDC in BLO in next 7 stitches. HDC in last stitch.

Row 1: Ch. 1, SC into first stitch, Ch. 2, skip next stitch, DC in next stitch, Ch. 2, skip next stitch, SC in next stitch. Repeat from to across, ending on a SC.

Row 2: Turn, Chain 5 (counts as DC and Ch 2), SC in top of next DC, Ch. 2, DC in top of next SC, Ch. 2. Repeat from to across, ending last repeat at Ch.2, DC into Ch.1 from previous row.

Row 3: Turn, Ch. 1, SC in first DC, Ch. 2, DC in top of next SC, Ch. 2, SC in top of next DC. Repeat from to across, placing last SC in 3rd chain of your Chain 5 from previous row.

Rows 4-121: Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you reach 121 rows or an approximate length of 59-60 inches from start of special stitches to end (be sure to end with a Row 3).

Switch to I Hook (5.5mm):
Rotate your work so that you’re working along the short side again. Chain 1, SC in 1st stitch and into the Ch. 2 space of the lace portion, then continue to SC in each DC, Ch. 2 space, and SC across. We will need to reduce the total count across from 37 to 34, so you will need to randomly skip 3 stitches or chain spaces as you’re going across. (34)

Row 1: Chain 10. HDC in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain back to the scarf. (9) Slip stitch into TWO SC from end of the scarf. (see photos below).
Note: For remaining rows, be sure to count back 9 stitches to ensure you’re not adding or subtracting stitches by accident.

Row 2: Turn. HDC in 1st stitch, HDC in BLO of next 7, HDC in last. (9)

Row 5: Turn, Ch. 1. HDC in first, HDC in BLO of next 7 (including BLO of 2 chains), HDC in the last. Slip stitch in TWO more SC from end of the scarf.

Rows 6-13: Even rows repeat Row 2, odd rows repeat Row 3.

Row 14: Turn, HDC in next 4, Ch. 2, skip 2 stitches, HDC in last 3. (9)

Row 15: Turn, Ch. 1. HDC in first, HDC in BLO of next 7 (including BLO of 2 chains), HDC in the last. Slip stitch in TWO more SC from end of the scarf.

FINISHING:
Cut 4 lengths of yarn about 12 inches each (one for each button) and attach one button at the 4th, 14th, 22nd, and 32nd rows to the short end of the scarf (opposite of the end you created the button holes on). Knot yarn on the backside of each button to secure them to the scarf.

Tie off and weave in all ends

Without twisting the scarf, fit buttons into button holes. Wrap your buttoned crochet scarf twice around to wear – or create your own way to wear it!
